TARGET-X Open Day – A Glimpse into the Future of 5G Technology

On September 17th 2024, the innovative research project TARGET-X opened its doors to the public for the first time. At the Testbed 5G Industry Campus Europe, visitors had the opportunity to experience the project’s progress and exciting demonstrations at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, the Laboratory for Machine Tools, and the Center Construction Robotics in Aachen, Germany.

Insights into the FSTP-Projects and Use Cases

The morning focused on the progress of the TARGET-X project. Project members presented an overview of the progress with emphasis on the KVI (Key Value Indicators) and the various use cases in a series of talks.

In addition, FSTP-project members from the first Open Call were also given a stage to pitch their projects. These presentations gave attendees the opportunity to dive deeper into the innovative applications of 5G technologies. For more information on the projects visit the Open Calls page.

Afternoon Program: Fascinating Live Demos

In the afternoon, three tours were offered, leading to different demos on the campus. Alongside the Open Campus Week the Center Construction Robotics, vistitors had the chance to get an understanding of the following demos:

  1. METER-X for Construction Process Analytics: This demo showcased the use of 5G to optimize construction processes through precise analysis.
  2. XR Assistant for Deconstruction Planning: Using extended reality (XR) technologies, a solution for more efficient deconstruction planning was presented.
  3. Teleoperation in the Automotive Sector: A remote demo presented predictive quality of service for tele-operated vehicles – a promising application in the automotive industry.

Additional Demos from the Manufacturing, Energy, and Robotics Sectors

On the location of  the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT attendees could also witness a series of demonstrations from the sectors:

  • Manufacturing:
    • Dynamic reconfiguration of a wireless sensor platform using the Asset Administration Shell
    • Traffic steering supported by the Asset Administration Shell
    • 5G device management
  • Energy:
    • METER-X robot trajectory analytics for optimizing energy processes
  • Robotics:
    • Edge-controlled automation with mobile manipulation

An Exciting Look into Current Research
